Mycelium vs. EPS Foam: The 2026 Buyer's Guide for SMB Brands
A side-by-side breakdown of cost, performance, and compostability for procurement teams ready to retire polystyrene this fiscal year.
Why 2026 is the year foam stops being free
For two decades, expanded polystyrene was the cheapest protective insert on the market. That math has flipped. Between Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees rolling out in California, Oregon, Colorado, and Maine, and retailer mandates from Sephora, Whole Foods, and REI, foam now carries a hidden cost that lives outside the per-unit invoice.
Mycelium packaging — grown from agricultural waste and mushroom root structure — is the protective insert most procurement teams are evaluating as a replacement. At Cerda Mycelium in Reno, we manufacture custom mycelium inserts for small and mid-sized brands. This guide compares the two materials honestly.
Unit economics
EPS foam costs $0.20–$0.45 per cubic decimeter at scale. Mycelium inserts from Cerda land between $0.55 and $1.10 in the 500–2,500 unit range, dropping below $0.70 above 10,000 units.
Once EPR fees ($0.10–$0.30 per unit depending on jurisdiction) and reverse-logistics returns are factored in, mycelium reaches parity around 5,000 units for most SKUs we quote.
Protective performance
- Shock absorption: Mycelium dissipates impact comparably to 1.5 lb/ft³ EPS in drop tests up to 12 lbs.
- Thermal stability: Holds form between –20°F and 160°F.
- Moisture: Hydrophobic skin coating optional for cold-chain applications.
End-of-life
EPS is functionally non-recyclable in the US (1.2% recovery rate per EPA 2023). Mycelium composts in a backyard pile in 45 days, certified ASTM D6400 and TÜV Home Compost.
When foam still wins
If your SKU ships in volumes above 500,000 per year and lands at a retailer with no EPR exposure, foam may still be marginally cheaper. For everyone else — DTC beauty, spirits, electronics, candles — mycelium pencils out.
